Feather Leather Earrings – how to make your very own.

I never thought “feather leather” was a thing. And I guess since these are really made from suede, it’s probably only in my own mind – but, you know, with that rhyme and all, it’s gotta be a thing! Anyway, feather leather earrings – or leather feather earrings – now THAT’s something I can get on board with. I’ve been seeing these around lately, and I love the statement of them. I’ve been on a small earring (like posts or small dangles) thing lately, and I think it’s time for that phase to be OVER.

And these are just the earrings to do it. I mean, come on – aren’t these just the best?  (and my nephew – he is totally the best!) In case you were wondering, these turned out to be really light. But they definitely make a big statement.

Materials

  1. Black craft suede. I used something similar to this, but even scraps will do. And feel free to go crazy on the color!
  2. Qty 6 – 4 mm jump rings – sterling if you like, or just plated. I like sterling as they are more durable and easy to work with.
  3. Qty 10 – 16 mm hammered silver drops– this is optional, but after wearing them a few times, I love the way they offset the black.
  4. Qty 2 – Earwires – your choice here, whatever metals work best in your ears!
  5. Optional – earring backs – I try to always have these on if I’m using fish hook ear wires.

Tools

How I made them:

  1. First, I created a template. I really just eyeballed the shape, drew it out on some card stock, erased and redrew a few times until I was happy. I also added in the “feather” cut lines – 2 on each side and 1 on the bottom middle. I cut this template out and punched a hole in the top just to make sure I liked how it hung.
  2. Using the grease pencil, I traced the template twice onto the suede. I actually traced one face up and one face down – just in case my template was a little non-symmetrical, I could have them look more symmetrical when they were complete.
  3. Using the X-ACTO knife, cut just inside your trace line, cutting it off. Place the suede piece next to each other to make sure they are mirrored. You might have to do a little trimming to get them exactly the way you want.
  4. Punch the hole near the top point. I eyeballed this for each piece, but you could put the cardstock template on top of the leather and punch through to make sure you had them even on both.
  5. Carefully cut your feather lines on each side of each template. Once again, I eyeballed them, but you could cut them using the template. Just place the template on top of each suede piece, then cut the lines through both the template and the suede.
  6. Now add the drops to a jump ring. Using both pairs of pliers, gently open the jump ring 1 or 2 millimeters. I do this by holding the jump ring on each side of the opening, with the jump ring facing me as a full circle. I push one end away and pull one end towards me. Never pull the end apart from each other, as you’ll warp the ring, and weaken it, making it difficult to keep items on it.  Add the drops, and then close the ring using the reverse steps to opening – gently pull and push the ends back together to close. Often I will also try to gently push the ends towards each other during this process in an effort to make the opening as small as possible.
  7. Using the opening technique described above, open another jump ring and put it through the leather feather and add your jump rings with drops to the front side of the earring. Close that ring up.
  8. Open another jump ring and add the ear wire and the jump ring attached to the leather feather. Close the jump ring.
  9. Repeat the same steps with the other earring.
  10. Immediately put in your ears. Shake your head. Enjoy!

2016 Word – Whole

Welcome 2016.

Crazy – right? I can’t believe it’s already 2016. My daughter will be 16 this year. I will be married 22 years this year. 2015 was a pretty full year, and I can’t even start to imagine what this year will bring. Hopefully joy and fun and learning. I know it will probably bring other things too – things that I wouldn’t wish for, but will probably have to see through. And that’s ok – it’s all the parts that make us whole, not just the good.

So when I was thinking about this years word for Ali Edward’s One Little Word class, nothing was coming to me. It was towards the end of December, and I thought this year, I might be growing into a word – since nothing seemed right. And then on Instagram, Ali posted her word for 2016, and it was like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. That was my word too. I struggled against it at first, I mean, having the same word as the class instructor, well, that just didn’t feel right. But since then, I’ve given in and let “whole” come over me.

And it has.

I began looking up quotes and meanings to help me really begin to get to know my word. And then I heard Karen Grunberg say something on the Paperclipping Roundtable that hit home for me. She talked about thinking about how you want to feel, and allow that to help guide your decisions, your projects, etc. Well, that’s exactly what I needed. Because I haven’t been feeling “whole” lately. But when I thought about why, I was gettin’ nothin’. And that’s because I hadn’t really defined it for me yet. What is whole to me? How do I want to feel that embodies whole in my life.

Granted – I’m not totally there – I mean really, it’s January, people! But I think feeling through the word will help me define my intentions for this year, and learn to feel whole.

That being said, I hope to start a series of posts: “My Whole Life”, that will document the insight I’m given or living through my word this year. I look forward to sharing!

What’s your word this year?

Here are a few peeks at a little last minute craftiness I put together for a “Grease” themed dinner we had this past weekend. Just a few family members joined us, but I had a great time setting things up. I plan on doing a full post later, but thought it would be fun to give you a peek.

Enjoy!

3 for Thursday

Welcome to 3 for Thursday – a place where I talk about what’s happening in my life right now. Not always sensical, but always me. Sometimes a random collection of things, but really what’s happening…this week in my life.

1. This necklace. I saw a tutorial for these adorable leather pendant necklaces on Delia Creates (here). I just had to try it! I love how it turned out. The perfect addition to a casual outfit. I definitely need to do more jewelry…I’ve missed it.

2. Enjoying the last bits of summer. Been hanging by the pool. Trying to find time to head out on the boat. Really just savoring all those summer things before Ashley heads back to school, the weather becomes cooler and the leaves start falling off the trees.

3. Teen room redo. Well, this one has been a long time coming. Ashley’s room has bee pink and green forever…and she’s not a pink and green kinda girl anymore. I think we’re headed for some blues. Can’t wait to get it done so she has a comfortable space.

What are you filling your days with?

A quick look at new weekend art, done with a few supplies and tools thrown into my pool bag. Loved being able to combine some family time with being creative!

The quote from e.e. Cummings really spoke to me. I’m finding my courage…but hope that I’ll never truly grow up!

Some paper embellishments glued down and painted and marked. Love how these add depth and fun.

The bird was a magazine cutout that I embellished.

 Enjoying the hand-lettering.

Have a good week!

Summer coffee

I love coffee in the morning. No matter how many things I read about how bad it is, or can be, I won’t give it up. It’s a vice, and I’m ok with that.

But sometimes hot coffee in the summer is hard to do. When it’s 74° at 9am, hot coffee just doesn’t sound refreshing…or enjoyable for that matter. So what’s a coffee girl to do? Because skipping the coffee just isn’t an option!

This morning I had some leftover coffee in my press from yesterday and decided to try some iced coffee. The result is just another reason why I won’t give up my coffee

Here’s what I did (please note that the amounts are estimates, I didn’t measure anything):

  • 2 cups cold coffee
  • 1/3 cup coconut milk
  • 1-2 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Dash cinnamon

Mix everything with the wisk immersion blender, pour over ice and get yo’ mornin’ started!

3 for Thursday

Welcome to 3 for Thursday – a place where I talk about what’s happening in my life right now. Not always sensical, but always me. Sometimes a random collection of things, but really what’s happening…this week in my life.

  1. Getting ready to travel. I’m going away. It was a last minute trip, and I’m so excited. Just me and my friend Annette. In Europe, for a week. What could be better? I think it’s just the break I need right now. Time to take my mind off the things that stress me out right now, and sit back and relax. Take in a culture WAY older than the one I’m embedded in. I don’t know what it will bring, but I’ve decided to be open to it. See where it takes me – see where it takes me when I get back.
  2. More travel journals.
And – because I’m going on a trip – I’ve been working on more of those travel journals. Remember my first one here? I loved that one – and decided to give it to my daughter. I found some more fabric and tried 2 more – to see how it went. I really enjoy making them. Soon I’ll post a tutorial. I need to practice my process first. I will be making more. I made an insert using some Gelli plate printed paper, which I’m using as my bullet journal. Then, I discovered that my Ranger Dylusions Dyan Reaveley Creative Journal (5×8) fits as an insert. Brilliant! I was going to make an art journal insert using mixed media paper so I’d have something to “art” while I’m away – and this saves me time (I still want to make one, though).
  3. Podcasts.
I’ve been listening to some new podcasts. I’ve spent most of the last year listening to health related podcasts, and while I’m still listening to some of them (ya, some of them I just had to cut out!), I’ve found some new ones that are just fun to listen to. And that’s what I need right now – not someone telling me all the things I’ve probably got wrong about my diet, my activity and my general life routine…they are just an enjoyable way to pass the time while I go back and forth to work. What are they? I thought you’d never ask. Just 2 for today – The Thrilling Adventure Hour: I started listening to this one back in February, and just love the hilarity of it! It’s “a podcast in the style of old time radio”, and the stories are just silly. Which, these days seems to be the best way to hold my attention. On one of their recent episodes, they mentioned another one – Spontaneanation with Paul F. Tompkins. This one was started by one of the actors on The Thrilling Adventure Hour, and it’s just an improv-ed show. Also really funny. So, if you are like me, take a listen, and laugh.

I Spy: Documented Life Project

I’ve been doing the Documented Life Project over at Art to the 5th Academy. Every month the challenges have a theme, and then each week, the challenges have a different focus…mediums, tools, etc. I have been loving it! I got started a bit late, but try to do as many weeks as I can. This week’s challenge was to use inks in your journal. Dyan Reaveley was the guest artist, and she has a great blog post on her interpretation here.

I decided to ink my background and then use my Speedball pen and India inks for the lettering. I’ve been trying to practice my hand lettering. I really enjoy it…but need to learn more. More on that later.

To finish my page, I decided to zentangle the anchor. I haven’t zentangled in a while, and I forgot how much I love it. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. I mean, I only stopped for dinner. I may have even been working on it while I made dinner. Luckily nothing burned…

Did you do something creative this weekend?

3 for Thursday

Welcome to 3 for Thursday – a place where I talk about what’s happening in my life right now. Not always sensical, but always me. Sometimes a random collection of things, but really what’s happening…this week in my life.

  1. Growing
We started seeds this year, which we had done last year, but this time I have a grow light. Which really helps the plants not become spindly (something I learned first hand). I love this process and seeing the seeds pop us and know that someday these plants will be providing so much good food through the season!

Earrings

  1. Creating
I’ve been testing out some new techniques for jewelry – this one being shrink plastic earrings. I’m hoping to develop a good process and finish for these little gems and use them for fundraising for some friends. Or to just keep giving to Ashley – she likes the round ones. Or make them for me. I spend most of the morning just creating these and had such a good time coming up with designs. I don’t like them all, but it was a good start for developing them.

Bathroom redo

  1. Building
That’s the master bathroom. So now three of us are sharing the other bathroom upstairs. We’ve had this bathroom the way it is since we moved in 15 years ago, so it’s about time to get it done. Down to the bones, and completely redo it!

I Spy: Imperfections

I’ve been crushing on art journaling. Getting my hands dirty and just mixing colors, papers, textures until I find something I like. But I’ve noticed that sometimes, I create and I end up with something that didn’t quite translate what was in my head. And I finished, thinking, “done is good.” But as the day went on, I just couldn’t let it go.

And that’s ok.

I went back and changed things, and ended up with a result that I’m much happier with. So here’s how it went. I finished the first time, and here’s what I had. I like it alright – but there was something about the bottom that just didn’t work for me. I letters weren’t what I wanted.

Embrace-first attempt

I liked how the top turned out. I even liked the background on the bottom, but the letters – nope. The sentiment was what I wanted, but I felt like it lost some of the impact.

Later in the day – I decided to go back to it. See if I could make it more what I felt. So I added some gesso to the bottom, and let it dry. Walked away to think about it.

With Gesso

And I already liked it better. But, ya, I wasn’t done.

I added some rubber stamps to some old book pages, and embellished them a bit, and then added some water colored flowers I had made as a trial a few days ago.

Embrace-final

So much better! I’m much happier with how things turned out. Now it’s done.
